It’s been a surreal experience watching the word count climb over the last six weeks. I know I’ve been writing a lot, but I swear — one day, I was at 27K words and then I looked up and I’m at 98K! I remember thinking, “Did I just do that?!

I think, for every author, the first time finishing a novel is a voyage of discovery. You don’t know how to do something until you do it, and then you know more about how to do it — and not do it — the next time. I’ve learned so much about my writing style, what I need to help the words flow, where my sweet spot is between plotting and pantsing. All tools I will get to use when working on the sequel!

It’s exciting watching this come together. Characters always seem alive to writers. They are fully articulated, walking-talking-breathing things before they ever walk on stage for you, the reader. It still amazes me how characters become even more solid once they are moving through the story. Not really different from us. Authors just get to see it happen, and I feel blessed for it.

I’m a little overdue for finishing the manuscript but still on target for querying season (turns out 100K words was not quite enough — hello there, Suddenly Moved Finish Line). I’ve been editing, working on my query letter, and researching agents when I’ve needed a break from the creative process.

But I have a whole list of things I can’t wait to share with you:

— The full premise of the novel, which I will reveal once querying begins!

— The world-building I have done to bring the Underworld to life in beautiful and horrifying ways.

— The characters, mortals and gods and those that fall somewhere in between.

— Updates on my querying process. My goal is to find the right agent, someone who loves dark fantasy, someone who believes in my project and who believes in me, someone who wants to help me build and shape my career to our mutual benefits. The day that happens, you’ll probably know before I can blog about it. I’m sure the squeals will carry for miles.

Thanks for your continued support — you know who you are. My friends, my Twitter #writingcommunity, my fans who have already said you’ll read anything I write. Not sure what I did to deserve you but I’m definitely working on delivering something worthy of you.

Until next time — go read something that makes your heart sing.
