I believe everyone has a purpose.

Part of the joy of living is puzzling out that map folks call a soul and finding your way to (often buried) treasure.  It might take ten, twenty, forty, eighty years.  Maybe the longer it takes, the more precious it becomes when you find it.  Time has a way of making things grow in value, and it certainly seems to hold that the longer it takes us to find our purpose, the more we appreciate it.

The other part of the joy of living is enacting your purpose, bringing to life whatever special thing it is that you are meant to bear into the world.  It might be a charity, or cutting-edge code, or educating young children.  It might be to entertain others through performance, or to give visual expression to unspeakable things through art, or to sustain and nurture others through the comforts of food and drink.

There is a bridge between these two parts — between discovering and enacting — that must be crossed.  And crossing it takes courage.

I am reminded of the scene in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade where Indy is seeking the Grail and he is expected to take a leap from the lion’s mouth across a falling-for-days abyss.

Indy steps out in faith and finds an invisible bridge beneath his feet.  Wait, let me take that back.  It’s not an “invisible bridge”.  That’s too simple.  It’s a bridge crafted long before Indy would need to use it, designed to appear like nothing was there, but as solid as any stone could be. All that to say:

If you’re looking for your purpose, keep looking

If you’ve enacted your purpose, please keep going

And if you’re standing at the lion’s mouth — you know your purpose and it’s time to leap and make it real — then take this to heart:

You are supported by something you may not be able to see, put in place long before you would need it, and its purpose is to help you cross from Dreaming into Doing.

This website, my journal, the stories and poems I’m sharing, these books to come — these are my leap.

And you, dear reader, that I cannot see but that I trust and know is there… well, thank you for supporting me.
